8-202 Second Grade

Mrs. Rodgers

Second Grade Room 202

Well we sure had a fun and crazy day on Tuesday celebrating the 100th day of school!  I will share some pictures via email since they don’t all fit on this page!  Students created some fantastic houses with all of those cereal boxes.  A special thank you to all of you for making this day happen.  I think we broke the record for the most cereal boxes collected at about 800!  Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered as well.  They were troopers and broke down all of those boxes after the fun!  Thank you all of attending conferences as well.  If you have any questions that came up after the fact, please contact me anytime.  This 100 days has gone very fast and I’m so thrilled to be working with all of your children.  Next up 1st Eucharist!

Enjoy your long weekend!  See you all on Wednesday!

God Bless,

Mrs. Rodgers

Note: We do not have a peanut allergy in our room, but we do have an allergy to pets so unfortunately we will not be able to have any more pets come to visit.  So sorry!

Subject Area News:
Week of 2/19/18

Religion:
This week we finish up Ch. 15 – Teach Us to Pray and continue our journey through Lent.  We learn about the different kinds of prayer – Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication (ACTS) and that the Mass is one big prayer that contains all 4 types of prayer.  Ch. 15 Test Thursday or Friday.

Prayers to practice at home – We pray the rosary daily in class and are learning all parts of it.  They will naturally learn the prayers through repetition, however, if you could practice the Sign of the Cross, Glory Be, Our Father, Hail Mary, Apostles Creed, and Hail Holy Queen at home as well, that would be wonderful.  We are also working on the Angelus, the Memorare, and the new Act of Contrition at school as an entire school.

Reading:
This week we continue reading Greek Myths aloud and writing short notes about of each myth and the characters we’re learning about.  We will continue working on our Greek Packet as we read our student book about Ancient Greece as well.  Finally, we begin an all class novel called the Secret of the Shamrock just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.  It’s a story about a young boy who travels back in time and meets St. Patrick.  If you’d like to look up the series – Look for the Chime Traveler Series by Lisa Hendey.

Writing:
This week will be all about using our Biography Organizer to write our Biography Report.  Once the reports are done, we will create our person to hold our report.  It’s a fun project and the students are enjoying learning about a famous figure in history.  Thank you for helping them finish up the books and create their organizers.

Poetry – Students all chose a poem from our weekly poems to memorize.  Poetry recitations will be the week of 2/26.  Please help your child memorize their poem.  We can’t wait to hear everyone!

Spelling:
No Spelling the week of 2/21/18.  For the week of 2/26 (Wk 19) our spelling focus for wrens & hawks will be the ow (snow) sound.  The focus for the eagle’s will be aw and oy vs. oi.  Test – Friday, March 2nd.

Math:
We will finish up Ch. 5 – Subtraction 2-Digit Numbers early the week of 2/26.   Afterward it’s all of Ch. 6 Geometry!  We finish this chapter with a fun art project!

We also continue our new math facts routine and continue graphing our results.

Science/History:
Ancient Greece continues for a couple more weeks.  We’ve learned about the gods & goddesses, The Trojan War, and how the city of Athens got its name.  Next up we learn about Athenian Democracy and what it was like to be an Athenian child back in Ancient Greek times.

Online Resources:
You can access both the Reading & Science curriculum via Think Central – https://www-k6.thinkcentral.com/ePC/start.do. Students can read the book online and much more.  I sent home information about how to log into Think Central. If you did not get it, please let me know and I will send it home again.  IXL has been getting a lot of use for Math. Thank you for your enthusiasm!  https://www.ixl.com/math/grade-2
